Another great, varied shoot today with an occasional gusting wind making stands two and four even more interesting! Crossing pairs which sometimes slowed and dipped and a high, Midi overhead which also slowed and dipped sometimes. (Did you spot that it was a Midi and not too far away? If not, read the signs on the stands for clues in future!)

Thanks as usual to Andy, Matt and Stuart and everyone else who helped set up and break down, and a special thanks to Andy who spent some time at the start troubleshooting the traps and targets, then wasn’t in the mood to shoot his layout.

As for the scores, Kevin Scarlett won AA for the third month running with a score of 54, one ahead of Glen Boxall.

After careful scrutiny of the score cards and checking the adding up, A Class produced a three-way tie with Nigel Foreman, Matt Brabon and James Faulkner all scoring 50. Our countback procedure takes the highest number of straights, nines, eights and so on and Nigel dropped out leaving James and Matt still tied. We then dropped to the next level to see who scored the first ten, and it was James on stand one so he wins A Class. Bad luck Nigel and Matt and well done to James. Incidentally, James was the only person from 40 entries who hit all ten on the rabbit stand.

Chris Wells took B Class honours with 48 ahead of Aaron Wiggins and Chris Flanders tied on 45.

Ian Parish triumphed in C Class with 45. Charlie Palmer was in second with 41 and James Oakford was third with 36. Charlie and James are regulars at our Skeet evenings so obviously the practice seems to help.

A special mention to Junior Otis Oakford, another Skeet regular who scored his highest sporting score of the year today with 30.

For the May shoot Matt, Andy and the Team had set a course through the woods to add yet more variety to our targets. We had a few trap issues including a broken spring which was quickly replaced by our maintenance team (Andy and Matt). A few of the other traps were also a bit erratic – having been fine during the setting up the previous day – I don’t think they are used to the sunshine. I am sure Andy will give them a stiff talking to and a liberal dose of WD 40 before the next shoot.

The average score last month was 36 and the average today was 38.6 so a little easier than last time, but still a few to catch you out including the fast, crossing Mini. There was another great score in B Class with Nigel Foreman hitting 54. Ian Hargreaves is also shooting well and scored 47 for second place in B Class.
Top of AA was Kevin Scarlett with 48. A Class winner was Chris Clark on 49, moving up two classes in two months.
There was a three-way tie for second in A class with Andy Willett, Peter Saich and Matt Oldland all hitting 48.
Despite not being able to see the mini, Jon Watson did well enough everywhere else to win C Class with 41. Runner up was Ian young on 40.
Matt Brabon has now been classified as A class and scored 39, only to be beaten by his son Callum with a great 40 in the Junior Guests category. Well done Callum.

The weather today was kind, mostly sunny but with a chill breeze. We had a good turnout of 47 members and guests, including six in the unclassified category – Welcome back.
There were an interesting set of targets with some presenting tougher than planned! The big news was in B Class where Chris Clark was overall high gun with an excellent 52 on a tricky layout. Runner-up in B was Aaron Wiggins hitting 46 with a pump action (no, I don’t know why) and third was Gary Evans on 44.
In ‘I can’t believe it’ news, Gary claimed to have hit all of the rabbits. This is of course to be verified once the dope test results are back. All of these were great scores when you compare them to A Class, where Jason Strudwick won with 42, ahead of James Faulkner, Peter Saich, James Horrod and Rick Warrington all on 41.
Elsewhere, Kevin Scarlett scored 45 in AA and Chris Flanders led C Class with 41. Second in C was Graham Winter with 39. Again, great scores when compared to A Class.
We had good assistance in setting up and taking down today so thank you to all those who helped, including Glenn who helped yesterday and could not shoot today, and Philip Spooner who had car trouble this morning and was unable to shoot but still came to help clear up afterwards.
In other good news, we managed to pick up lots of unbroken clays from the Teal and Midi from behind on stands one and two as they landed in the soft meadow. As for the rabbits, some of them are still going!

There was a good turnout today of 36 members and 10 guests who were treated to a great shoot with more new and interesting targets! The rabbit through the trees was realistic and there were some nice long-range crossers and a midi teal to test your chokes and eyesight.

The rain stopped just in time for the shooting to start but thanks to everyone who helped set up in the rain this morning, and again thank you to those who helped clear up. It really does help the core team to put everything away and leave the ground earlier, although Andy and a few others still have several hours of work to do unloading, cleaning, checking figures etc.

Glen Boxall won AA Class on 53, with Kevin Scarlett winning A class on 52, just ahead of Jason Stredwick and Peter Saich on 51.

B Class was also close with James Faulkner scoring 50, narrowly beating Nigel Foreman on 49 and Aaron Wiggins on 48.

In C Class, last month’s runner-up John Martin took top spot on 43. Second was Ian Parish on 40 with a three-way tie between Stuart Hulme, Ron Turner and James Oakford all scoring 39.

We had a good day for our February shoot.
Although it was very wet underfoot, the forecast heavy rain did not materialise, so we had fine weather for setting up, shooting and putting away. Thank you to all those who helped this weekend.

We had yet another great range of targets, including some ‘now you see them, now you
don’t’ if you were unlucky with your timing and cloud cover.

Glen Boxall won A Class on 53, despite missing four targets on the rabbit stand. Peter Saich started strongly at the other end, with 30 out of 30 over the three stands, but slipped to three sevens on the ‘tricky’ end to finish in second place on 51 and returning to form, James Horrod took third place with 49.

Jason Stredwick was the clear winner in B Class with 51. He also had problems with the
rabbit stand, dropping five targets then only missed four more across the next five stands. Equal second in B Class were Ian Hargreaves and James Faulkner on 46 each.

C Class was very close with Jerry Sollick and John Martin both scoring 45, but Jerry took the trophy with two ‘straights’ to John’s one. Charles Duncan was third with 39.

Winter Series 2023-2024
Andy Willett dropped below his usually high average but had done enough already to win the A Class Winter Series by a large margin. He finished on 160 for his first three shoots, leaving Glen Boxall in second with 149 and James Horrod in third on 146.
B Class was close, with James Faulkner taking the honours on 143, with Jason Stredwick one behind on 142 and Ian Hargreaves in third place on 140.
The winner of C Class was Ron Turner on 121, equal second were Peter Garland and James Oakford with 115 and Charles Duncan on 112 was third.

A good turnout today for our annual Handicapped Pairs shoot.  Another interesting and varied layout, with a cold wind affecting hands and targets!

There were no class prizes but some very good scores in all classes today.

Top of A class was Andy Willett with 52.

Aaron Wiggins scored 51 in B Class, just ahead of Ian Hargreaves on 50 and John Martin scored 46 to lead C Class.

Top team scores were Jerry Sollick and Andy Willett who tied with Peter Saich and Glen Boxall, with both teams hitting 94 targets, but both lost out due to their low handicaps.

Overall winners with 126.35 were Ron Turner and Chris Clark, marginally ahead of Charles Duncan and Stuart Hulme on 126.21

In third were Aaron Wiggins and Peter Garland on 123.54 while Otis Oakford and John Hughes were in fourth on 122.

Sunday 17th December – today saw the annual Xmas Handicap competition shot over 7 stands, with prizes for all members, a raffle and free hot drinks and pizzas. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and there was a great deal of much appreciated help in making a good start in clearing away before the food and prize giving.

In the regular competition, which this month was for the set of Tom Phillips trophies, C class was won by Mike Thackery on 36, ahead of John Webb who scored 31. In B class, the result was the opposite of the handicap placings, with John Hughes (43) ahead of Stuart Hulme (43) on countback. The A class winner this month was Rick Warrington with 48, just shading Chris Clark and James Faulkner who were 1 behind on 47. The non-trophy AA class top scorer this month was Andy Willett on 53, ahead of runner up Kevin Scarlett on 51.
